Hurling - Having led from start to finish Barrow Rangers had three points to spare as they edged passed Galmoy in the first round of the Junior Championship last Sunday in Jenkinstown.

Both sides know each other pretty well so there was some positional changes from those stated in the programme. In the tenth minute of the first half Richie Doyle landed a fantastic point from around his own 45 to make the score 5 points to 2 in favour of Rangers. The other stand out score of the first half was a fine individual score by Cathal English in the 25 minute when he gathered the ball in the middle of the field and soloed through the Galmoy defence before striking the ball over the bar while on the run. Galmoy’s, Philly Russell was proving a thorn in the side of Rangers and his points from play and frees were keeping Galmoy in the game. By the 28 minute of the half there was only a point between the teams but 2 late points saw Barrow Rangers go to the dressing rooms leading 12 points to 9. Bar row Rangers made a lightning start to the second half and rattled over 3 points inside 6 minutes but the next 3 points went the way of Galmoy. The two teams then went point for point, with three minutes remaining Barrow Rangers led by a single point. Having withstood some constant Galmoy pressure they held their nerve and tagged on two late points to see out the game. The final score read Barrow Rangers 20 points, Galmoy 17 points. They now play Lisdowney next weekend with the winners qualifying for the semi-final.
