Kilkenny Castle
TravelMag has listed Kilkenny as one of the top twenty most charming medieval towns/small cities in Europe!
Ireland's Medieval City sits amongst nineteen other incredible locations across the continent including Bologna in Italy, Bruges in Belgium, Carcassonne in France and York in England.
Kilkenny is the only location on the island of Ireland to make the list!
TravelMag Editor Paul Stafford appeared to be keenly impressed by the Norman heritage and legacy on display in Kilkenny.
He writes that "while a lot of the character of those days has been replaced by more modern buildings, there’s enough charm in the main sights to go around".
Some of the local sites that got a special mention in the piece were Kilkenny Castle and Gardens, St Canice's Cathedral and the Medieval Mile Walking Trail.
In order to qualify for this list, candidate towns/cities needed to have a significant collection of well-preserved medieval relics, such as places of worship, buildings, monuments, streets and town walls.
The list was then whittled down further to places where 'medieval flair' can still be readily felt by visitors.
