Stalwart of the Fenians, Willie Brennan has revealed relegation to the third tier of Kilkenny club hurling has been a ‘dose of reality’ but believes the North Kilkenny club can turn their fortunes around.

A late goal from Sean Hunt meant St Martin’s scraped out a historic win in the intermediate relegation final last year, condemning the Fenians to the JJ Kavanagh Junior Hurling League/Championship for the first time in almost six decades.

“Different feeling this year, disappointing end to last year, obviously going back down to junior but look, the Fenians started as a junior club back in 1968,” Brennan told Kilkenny People Sport.

“We don’t see any point in throwing the toys out of the pram because of this. It’s a dose of reality alright but things have been going well and we’ll give it one hell of a crack.

“Time is a healer and you have to turn a negative into positive because there’s no point in dwelling on the negative of being relegated,” he added.

“We’ll dust ourselves off and put our shoulders to the wheel.”

Stay tuned for more interviews from the launch of the intermediate and junior league/championships over the coming week.
