Kilkenny Great War Memorial Committee held a commemorative ceremony at the Kilkenny Great War Memorial in the Peace Park on Sunday to remember those from the South-East of Ireland who served in the ANZAC Forces in World War I.
Ambassadors from Australia and New Zealand were in attendance for the ceremony. The ceremony consisted of prayer, poetry, music, wreath laying, playing of the Last Post and Reveille, flag raising and concludes with the Australian, New Zealand and Irish national anthems.
The Irish soldiers, clergy and nurses were all volunteers who signed up with the new country to which they had emigrated. Both Australia and New Zealand's identity were forged by the sacrifice made by their forces in the Allied armies of World War I.
The spirit and sacrifice of the ANZAC Forces is remembered every April 25 in dawn ceremonies around the world at the time of the assault of the ANZAC Forces in the Gallipoli Campaign.
