John steps aside after 40 years in rail

Over 130 friends, family and work colleagues gathered in the Springhill Hotel last Friday celebrate the retirement of local man John Delaney.

John’s career spanned 40 years in Irish Rail, the last eight of which were spent as station manager of Kilkenny’s Mac Donagh Junction train station. A Wexford native, he would still always look forward to his (almost) annual reception of the Liam MacCarthy Cup by rail.

“I was very lucky,” he said.

“I loved the job and the people.”

John is just back from Lanzarote with his wife Ann Marie. He’s not getting too comfortable with his new lifestyle just yet, however. The months ahead already have a packed schedule.

He has built a log cabin out the back of his Thomatown home, and he also hopes to get back to playing some golf.

He also plans on travelling: First to Australia to see his kids, but also – one day – to do Route 66 on a Harley.
