WATCH: Eugene McGuinness elected in Kilkenny City LEA, with next candidate now just 44 transfers away

Independent Eugene McGuinness is elected, Fianna Fail's Joe Malone is close to the quota

Independent councillor Eugene McGuinness has just been elected to the third seat for Kilkenny City LEA on Count 8.

He polled 1,136 first preferences, and now has benefited enough from transfers to land that third seat. His vote was increased markedly on his 2019 result, when he was first elected to the sixth seat with 862 votes.

We'll have Eugene McGuinness' post-election interview coming up shortly - he is now making big noises about a tilt for a Dail seat in the next General Election. Stay tuned for his video chat with Liam Kelly O'Rourke.

Earlier today, Andrew McGuinness (FF) and David Fitzgerald (FG) were first over the line on Count 1.
