The piece is a homage to Gaelic Games and the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletics Association (GAA) in Thurles

A Kilkenny scupltor has created a major public artwork - a bronze statue - set to be unveiled at Semple Stadium in Thurles, Tipperary this week.

The artist Aidan Harte created the three-metre bronze statue, which pays homage to the birthplace (Thurles) and legacy of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The piece titled ‘Ár gCluichí Féin’ (Our Own Games) depicts two figures and captures the spirit of Gaelic Games in motion. It is the first GAA statue to feature a female player.

Uachtarán of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) Jarlath Burns will be in attendance, as will under-13s representatives from The Primary Games . Senior hurling team captain, Ronan Maher, Vice-Captain Jake Morris, Senior Camogie team Captain, Caoimhe McCarthy will also be present.

The sculpture is part of a ‘placemaking’ investment strategy including a tourism and active travel initiative, road, cycle path and public realm development by Tipperary County Council.

Aidan Harte’s first job within the art world was at Kilkenny animation studio Cartoon Saloon, where he worked alongside founders Tomm Moore and Paul Young. He studied in Florence, and has produced many notable works including a bust of Gerry Adams, and the conversation-provoking Púca piece in Clare.
