Music lovers across Kilkenny have been shocked and heartbroken this morning, Wednesday, with the news that Glen Hansard has died in a road accident in Dublin.

The former frontman with The Frames, the singer-songwriter was involved in a motorbike crash in the early hours of this morning at Strawberry Beds in Dublin.

He had a tour planned in the coming months and was due to take to the stage at The Hub in Kilkenny on October 25 next.

Just last February he was in Kilkenny with The Frames when they played Cleere’s.

A firm favourite with local music lovers, Hansard was as comfortable on the small stage as the world stage. He first came to wide fame as ‘Outspan’ in the Bafta winning movie The Commitments and he memorably won an Oscar for best song for Falling Slowly, from the movie Once.

Glen Hansard, who was 56, was married to Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa and they had their first child in October 2022. They split their time between Ireland and Finland.

His last social media post on Facebook, yesterday (Tuesday) was a throwback to when he performed on stage with Bruce Springsteen in Kilkenny.
