Tractor driver fined for using mobile phone on busy motorway

Gardaí in Kildare have confirmed a tractor driver was one of 15 people gardaí found to be using a mobile on a busy road. 

Over the past 24 hours gardaí in Kildare have issued 15 Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPNs) to motorists for holding a mobile phone whilst driving.

Each driver received FCPNs of €120 and 3 Penalty points issued to all.

Naas Roads Policing reports the most notable of these detections were a Tractor on the N7 Naas, an Articulated Lorry in Prosperous and a Cement Lorry in Kilcullen.

In a statement on Facebook, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Mobile phones are the number one distraction to drivers on Irish roads. Despite the fact that using mobile phones while driving is killing people on our roads, people continue to text, make phone calls, take selfies or update their social media pages while driving. Statistics show that making a call makes a driver four times more likely to be involved in a collision and texting makes a driver (23) times more likely to be involved in a collision."
