‘A MAKER’S Journey, From Inspiration to Creation’ is the theme of the Made In Kilkenny craft network’s exhibition during this year’s Kilkenny Arts Festival – but what exactly is the makers’ inspiration? Here, one of the 30 makers whose work is featured shares insight into her work.
In Maeve Coulter’s case, she says she stumbled across her inspiration. “When I moved house, I discovered an old suitcase full of documents, newspaper clippings and letters, fragments of other people’s lives. It makes me think about the things we save, objects loaded with meaning, reminding us of who we are.” This find led her on a journey of reminiscence and discovery to create her wall hanging.
Maeve’s wall hangings combine various textile techniques such as fabric painting, embroidery, felt and appliqué. They reflect her love of natural forms, colour and texture. She originally trained as a fine art printmaker and continues to work in this area.
‘A Maker’s Journey’ will be in Butler House, Kilkenny from August 5-14.
