Clogh writer, Willie-Joe Meally and artist, Sarah Lincoln at the mouth of the old Deerpark tunnel
Artist, Sarah Lincoln and Clogh writer, Willie-Joe Meally have been creatively exploring histories around the old Deerpark Mine in Castlecomer as part of an ArtLinks-funded collaboration.
On Thursday (August 17) the pair will launch the product of their labours – a 15-minute long film called ‘Brave Bones’. Included in the film is the depiction of the drawing of a map of the underground workings of the Deerpark Mine by two ex-coalminers Timmy Wilson and Jimmy Carroll. Timmy and Jimmy are filmed, expertly guiding Willie-Joe, in the creation of this map.
Willie-Joe and Sarah have been subsequently using this map to try to trace the route of these tunnels above ground – as a way of animating the local landscape and keeping the stories of the Deerpark Mine alive. Along with their wanderings through this North/East corner of Kilkenny, they also explore the fascinating geological history of the mine.
The film is a creative drift through these stories, using poems, film footage and still images.
The launch of 'Brave Bones' will take place at the Butler Gallery on August 17 at 6.30pm.
The event is free but ticketed. For more see butlergallery.ie
