Kilkenny and Wexford councillors form joint group for border matters

A joint working group of councillors from Kilkenny and Wexford County Councils has been formed.

The group will deal with matters of interest to both authorities along the county border, in Rosbercon.

Formation of the group was first proposed at a joint meeting of the New Ross and Callan Thomastown area councillors, in February.

A meeting between Kilkenny County Council officials and councillors and residents in Rosbercon has also since taken place.

Rosbercon is separated from New Ross by the River Barrow but is in the Kilkenny County Council area.

At the April meeting of Callan Thomastown Municipal District councillors, this week, nominations from the Kilkenny side of the border were confirmed.

Acting Director of Services Fiona Deegan said that the meeting with Rosbercon residents had been quite constructive.

The Kilkenny delegation of officials and councillors came away from the meeting with three key goals: to get the joint group established and get the lines of communication open; engage with the local community on the subject of grant schemes; and it was agreed to follow up with the previous developer of the Castlehyde estate to ascertain his intentions for the site.

The two representatives from Kilkenny County Council elected to the joint committee are Cllr Michael Doyle and Cllr Deirdre Cullen. A date for the joint group's first meeting has still to be set.
