The Garda Youth Awards were held in the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise over the weekend.

Miley Doran, a young man from Carlow, who saved a mother and daughter from drowning in the river Barrow, was awarded at the ceremony.

Miley Doran was seventeen years old on Sunday 30th May 2021 when he heard the screams of Sophie Foley-Smith (13), who had gotten into difficulty while swimming in the river. Her mother jumped in to save her but quickly also began to struggle against the river's current.

Miley sprung to action immediately and rescued the young girl and her mother.

The young man's family had no idea of Miley's bravery until Sophie’s grandmother posted on social media praising him.

An Garda Síochána for Carlow stated, "He is naturally very modest but a remarkable advocate for the Irish Traveller Community who deserves every accolade and commands all our respect."
