Kilkenny councillors have paid tribute to outgoing proprietor of Kearns Family Butchers, Richie and his family, who shut the doors on their Ballybough premises for the final time on Saturday.
"This decision has not been an easy one, but we take comfort in knowing that we have had the privilege of serving such an incredible community. Over the years, we have built more than just a business – it has been part of the community, full of friendships, conversations and memories," the family said in a statement on social media.
The news left much sadness in the community, none more so than St John's Parish natives and local representatives Cllr Joe Malone and Cllr Andrew McGuinness.

"I remember being in it on the first day in 1987 and I continue to this day," Fianna Fáil councillor and Kearns family friend, Joe Malone said at Friday's sitting of the Kilkenny Municipal District in County Hall.
"I just want to wish the family well. In life you have to make decisions but it's going to be a loss," he said.
Cllr Malone also used the opportunity to urge fellow councillors and members of the public to shop locally in order to support local traders.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil colleague and Mayor of Kilkenny, Cllr Andrew McGuinness
"On behalf of members here and as Mayor of Kilkenny, I want to offer our support, our appreciation and our sympathies to Richie Kearns and his family," Cllr McGuinness remarked.
"As a young person in my own house, away from my own family, I lived in Beechlawn on the Johnswell Road and Richie Kearns was the first butcher to ever supply my meat for my first attempted meal," the mayor humorously recalled, adding his own personal best wishes and support on behalf of the McGuinness family.
