“We are immensely proud of Beren De Hora, Project Director, and Tom Clayton, FT Project Manager and Geotechnical Lead, for delivering this project for Fehily Timoney and Company. These projects are incredibly challenging and rewarding. They drive innovation and they technically challenge us. It is wonderful that it received the recognition it truly deserved.
“We are particularly thankful to John Sisk & Son Ltd for giving us the opportunity. It's always a pleasure to work with and support them. We couldn't have delivered this project without the greater team. Pretty much everyone in FT supported this project somewhere along the line. It took a whole-of-team effort from everyone across the company. Thanks too to Ramboll UK and Clandillon Civil Consulting Ltd for their support.”It's the second win in quick succession for FT. In December, the British Geotechnical Association awarded the coveted Fleming Award to Fehily Timoney and Company and its project partners for addressing significant geotechnical challenges, also on Cork’s Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade Scheme.
The British Geotechnical Association’s (BGA’s) 2024 Fleming Award Competition was held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. FT was among three finalists shortlisted across Ireland and the United Kingdom. University College London associate professor Pedro Ferreira, who represented the judging panel on stage, said: “The project stood out and should be commended as the winner because it addressed significant geotechnical challenges associated with the presence of a very soft alluvium and consequently large deformations using different soil reinforcement techniques to control settlement.”
Fehily Timoney and Company employs over 100 members of staff, including engineers, scientists, town planners, geotechnicians, ecologists and technical support staff across offices in Cork, Dublin and Carlow. The company is prioritising equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) this year. EDI has always been a strength of FT’s and this year the company is hoping to gain bronze and silver accreditations with the Irish Centre for Diversity and are working towards achieving Gold status next year.
At present, the team at FT consists of 47% females, 25% are non-nationals and 13 nationalities are represented. “These are incredible stats from and equality, diversity and inclusion perspective but also when you think that traditionally engineering, environmental science and planning consultancies are male dominated,” Sinead Timoney added.

To support this initiative, FT took the ‘Pledge to Net Zero’ in December 2024 and are committed to publishing a variety of environmental and sustainability related metrics including their carbon footprint annually going forward.
“It’s a very exciting time to be a part of Fehily Timoney”, says Sinéad Timoney. “We’re continuing to build and strengthen our planning and environmental services, engineering design and construction presence in the sector. We’ve grown 35% over the past 5 years and look forward to continued success and growth.”
FT continues to deliver projects in Ireland, and internationally, in core competency areas of Sustainable Infrastructure, Energy and Planning, Circular Economy and Environment in particular. FT’s breadth of experience and expertise enables the delivery of a broad range of services to both the private and public sector clients.
