Kilkenny group plan further improvements for city centre

High Street, Kilkenny

The Kilkenny City Centre Task Force is celebrating a successful period of collaboration and progress as it continues its mission to enhance the vibrancy and vitality of Kilkenny’s historic city core.

Established in 2019 in response to local concerns around business closures and economic vitality, the Task Force brings together a diverse group of stakeholders—business owners, Kilkenny County Council and community safety representatives committed to creating a dynamic and attractive city centre.

The Taskforce works collaboratively to maintain and improve the vibrancy of Kilkenny's core area, drive footfall to the City and protect the city's unique trading character.

Over the past few years, the Taskforce has overseen a series of targeted actions focused on increasing footfall, supporting local enterprise, and improving way finding.

The group supported the delivery of tangible improvements including an overarching brand for Kilkenny, improvements to street and way finding signage, city maps and later opening initiatives though the night time economy initiatives. This work has laid the groundwork for a sustainable future.

Speaking about the work achieved to date and the path ahead, Colin Ahern, Chair of the City Centre Taskforce, said, "Kilkenny has always been a special place, and the collaborative work of the Taskforce is ensuring it remains a thriving destination.

"We’ve seen real results from our efforts so far, and we’re now building a new plan that will guide us through the coming years. Our focus is on driving footfall and spend—making sure the heart of our city remains strong, vibrant, and full of life."

The Taskforce is currently finalising its next plan, which will build on past successes and respond to emerging opportunities and challenges. This ongoing commitment reflects the shared vision of a flourishing, people-focused city centre.
