Kyteler's Inn, Kilkenny
The ancient walls of Kyteler's Inn have echoed with whispers of witchcraft and mystery for centuries.
Now, one of Ireland’s most storied medieval pubs is draughting its legend into a bold new creation: The Black Cat, a rich and enigmatic stout inspired by Kilkenny’s most infamous witch and her mysterious feline companion.
Drawing on the haunted heritage of Dame Alice Kyteler — a 14th-Century noblewoman accused of sorcery — The Black Cat Stout is as dark and complex as the myths that surround her. Brewed by O'Haras in small batches using roasted malts, charred barley, and a hint of black cherry, this stout delivers a smooth pour with a hauntingly long finish. At 4.3% ABV, it’s both a tribute and a toast to the pub’s past.

A Legend in Every Glass
According to local folklore, Alice Kyteler’s black cat was no ordinary pet. Villagers believed the cat to be a familiar — a supernatural creature sent to aid in witchcraft. Witnesses at her infamous trial in 1324 swore they saw the cat speak in tongues, vanish into shadows, and even sip from Alice’s cauldron by candlelight.
While Alice narrowly escaped execution, her cat was never found. Some say it still prowls the stone corridors of Kytelers Inn, eyes glowing like coals, guarding the secrets of its mistress.
“The Black Cat isn’t just a stout — it’s a story in a pint,” says JD Flynn, Kyteler's Inn. “We wanted to brew something that honoured our unique heritage — something dark, bold, and unforgettable. It’s a taste of Kilkenny’s history with a touch of mischief.” This is an amazing collaboration with a local business and brewery, we are delighted to work alongside O’Haras to create this product.
The Black Cat is now available exclusively at Kyteler's Inn. The Black Cat Stout sits perfectly alongside her sister brew The Witches Brew also brewed by O’Haras. Come raise a glass to the mystery, the myth, and the magic — and discover why The Black Cat is destined to become a legend of its own.
