'The day has finally come' - Tributes paid as Kilkenny businessman closes store

Michael Rossiter

Well known local business Rossiter Shoe Repairs and Pedorthics, based on the Butterslip in Kilkenny City closed for the final time last Saturday evening.

The business was in operation for 38 years but but now will operate online and serve its loyal base of customers.

"To all our loyal customers the day has finally come!," Michael Rossiter said.

"After 38 years in Kilkenny it’s time go collect my lotto prize. My retirement from cobbling!," he added.

It may not be the end but the news certainly marks a major transition in a storied career, since the store first opened in May 1988 at the old arcade, before moving to what has now become home.

"There’s things I want to do with my sons. I want to give them a little bit of mentoring through little projects that they are going through so no, Michael Rossiter ain’t gone, he’ll still be around," he told the Kilkenny People earlier this year.

"It’s part two. I’m not going to be a daytime TV fella. There will be a need to get up every day,” he said, revealing he’s looking forward to working on an exciting project with his son with details expected very soon...

Well wishes have been pouring in since the shop's closure on Saturday.

"Congratulations on your retirement!! You will be missed so so much," one person wrote.

"The very best of luck in your retirement. You'll be missed in Kilkenny."

Another wrote, while another social media user said; "Michael you were one of the best! You still are one of the best!! Enjoy every day of retirement."
