'Absolutely scandalous' vandalism at public park in Kilkenny

Cllr Joe Lyons has condemned the vandalism at The Motte Field in Callan

The ‘absolutely scandalous’ vandalism at a public park in south Kilkenny has been condemned.

Signage in Callan’s Motte Field was ‘defaced’ sometime last week, according to local councillor Joe Lyons.

The signage is designed to show walkers in the field the history of the motte and bailey, and information about the local flora and fauna.

Cllr Lyons told last week’s meeting of Callan Thomastown district councillors that someone had driven into the Motte Field, from the Callan bypass, and “defaced the signage.”

He said it was “absolutely scandalous, given all the hard work” that went into establishing the walking area.

He asked if CCTV could be installed in the Motte Field.

Area Engineer Declan Murphy said he would look into it.

The Motte Field loop walk was officially opened in the summer of 2021 and plans are well underway to double the park area to create a double loop walk.
