Councillors in the Callan Thomastown municipal district have given their support to members of the fire service who are currently taking industrial action.

Pickets have been placed outside three stations in the municipal district - Thomastown, Callan and Graignamanagh.

In one of her first tasks as Chairperson of the Municipal District, Cllr Deirdre Cullen said it was their role as local councillors to show solidarity with the fire fighters.

“We know the issues, they are fighting for adequate pay. The issues and concerns are very real,” Cllr Cullen said.

The men and women of the fire service are practically the first to arrive at the scene of a disaster, she said, and it’s incumbent on the local representatives to show solidarity with them.

“We know the huge contribution they make to the community, in good times and in bad.”

Cllr Cullen proposed they send a letter to the minister to show their support for the Callan, Thomastown and Graignamanagh stations.

This proposal was seconded by Cllr Michael Doyle, who said he offered his full support to the fire service staff.

Cllr Matt Doran said support for the fire service industrial action is growing.
