Callan bridge - road closures to allow bridge clearing work in coming weeks

Kilkenny County Council has engaged contractors

Bridge Street

Bridge Street, Callan, will be closed for bridge cleaning works

A main route through Callan will be closed for two days, later this month, to allow long-awaited work on the bridge over the King’s River.

Contractors have informed the local municipal district that they will be in Callan to do the work  needed to clear the eyes of the bridge on two Saturdays - September 23 and 30.

Because there will be a vehicle parked on the bridge during the work Bridge Street will be closed to traffic on these days.

The ‘eye’ of the bridge is the space under the arches, below the bridge. They are currently clogged with silt and plant growth.

Cllr Joe Lyons welcomed the news and said he hoped the contractors would ‘go a little bit further’ into the river when doing the clearing work. He said the problem getting other work done on the King’s River is a lack of funding.
