Pedestrian crossing under construction at Bridge Street in Callan
Two towns in Kilkenny are leading the way by installing the firsts solar powered pedestrian crossings in the county!
Graignamanagh and Callan have seen new crossings in stalled in recent weeks, and the innovative nature of the works was revealed at the December meeting of the local authority.
The crossing lights are solar powered and not connected to the electricity grid.
The first to go on-stream was the pedestrian crossing at the boys school on Wood Road in Graignamanagh. It was installed under the Safe to School scheme.
Road markings were completed before Christmas.
Meanwhile, in Callan new pedestrian crossings on Bridge Street will also be solar powered. Work was completed at Lower Bridge Street before Chriatmas and will start on Upper Bridge Street in the new year. The new crossing is raised, with widened footpaths, new road surfacing and line marking. Traffic priority has also changed, motorists should be aware.
Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere said it was great to see Graignamanagh piloting the solar energy beacons and it was brilliant to see the success of it. He acknowledged the vision and foresight of Kilkenny County Council.
Area Engineer Declan Murphy said that going forward all pedestrian crossings will be solar powered. He told the meeting that a trend across Europe is to only install signs in well lit areas and no beacons.
