There is disappointment in Callan that long-awaited work to clear silt from the bed of the King’s River has been delayed.

Chair of the Callan Thomastown Municipal District, Cllr Joe Lyons, raised the matter at the recent meeting of district councillors, when he said he was disappointed to learn the work had not started and it could be the end of July before the work begins.

Meeting Administrator Anne Marie Shortall updated councillors on the project.
She said the tender process was progressed and finalised with the successful tender, however, some further information was required to be processed and this has resulted in a delay.

An ecologist has also been appointed to the project, she said. An on-site meeting at the river is due to be held soon, Ms Shortall added.

Cllr Lyons said his worry is that a month will be lost when the time frame for the work to be carried out is so tight.
Acknowledging the concern, Ms Shortall said regulations had to be followed and sometimes that can cause delays.
