Kilkenny People Archive (1957) - The bakery and grocery premises of Castlecomer, Mr Alexander Peirce, The Square, were wrecked by an explosion, believed to have been caused by gelignite, and which was heard within a radius of four miles of the town, at 1.10am on Wednesday morning.
Mr Peirce, his wife and son Roy (aged 9), who were sleeping on the premises, had a miraculous escape, none of them receiving injury.

The explosion created a big scare in the town, and people were out in the streets, some in their night attire, in the early hours of the morning. The damage was not confined to Mr. Peirce's premises. Almost every house in the street suffered, including the Creamery, which is 300 yards from the scene, and three other premises, one in Kilkenny Street and two in Barrack were also damaged.
