Gardaí in Kilkenny launched their October Bank Holiday Weekend Road Safety Campaign this year by conducting a checkpoint at the off ramp on the M9 Motorway.
All traffic travelling southbound was exited at Junction 5 where drivers interacted with Garda members from Kilkenny/Carlow Divisional Roads Policing Units.
1600 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 345 motorists were tested for drink driving and 14 motorists were tested for drug driving.
Two motorists were arrested for drug driving and three vehicles seized for no insurance.
Sample testing for drug and drink driving was in full force. Unfortunately all times of day are impacted negatively by both drink and drug driving.
This year so far in Kilkenny there has been three road traffic fatalities.
In Kilkenny a checkpoint was conducted with the assistance of Kilkenny County Council , fire brigade and civil defence attended the checkpoint, two motorists were arrested again for drug driving.
Inspector Paul Donohoe, Divisional Roads Policing said checkpoints and patrols, day and night, over this bank holiday weekend mean gardaí will not be found wanting in our effort to keep people safe on our roads in both day and night time economy.
"Driver responsibility is key. It is clear drink and drug driving negatively impact driver behaviour. Please think twice before getting behind the wheel when under the influence. Help us, help you, keep people safe this bank holiday weekend," a garda spokesperson said.
