A community garda initiative aimed at targeting anti-social behaviour is underway in Kilkenny.
Sergeant John Duffy briefed members of a recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committe and also informed members that at present there is a community garda assigned to each area of the city.
The sergeant told members that 107 patrols have been carried out at McDonagh Junction and 284 patrols have been carried out in the High Street area of the city.
“The emphasis is on anti-social behaviour, begging and thefts,” he said adding that the garda presence around the city centre will help reduce crime.
Cllr Eugene McGuinness asked if the Chief Supt was confident that there are enough gardaí to deal with anti-social behaviour and also said that community gardaí need to get out into estates and meet with people.
Chief Supt Petitt said that he is satisfied with the level of resources but added there are vacancies.
