A Garda at a roadside speed check
A motorist was detected driving at a speed of 186 kilometres per hour at N24 at Tibberaghny, Piltown on Saturday over the bank holiday weekend.
Local gardaí carried out more than 60 checkpoints and seized four vehicles locally as part of an enforcement campaign.
The speeding driver was clocked travelling 86km/h over the 100km limit. In Kilkenny, there were additional checkpoints and a high garda visibility on the roads as a road safety campaign was in place over the bank holiday weekend.

There were 20 mandatory intoxicant checkpoints in place along with 44 other checkpoints. According to local gardaí four vehicles were seized for having no insurance in Kilkenny and there were two people arrested on suspicion of drink driving and a third person arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
Nationally, there were 946 drivers detected speeding and 127 people arrested for on suspicion of driving while under the influence.
Top detections nationally:
- 81km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R394 in Milltown, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath
- 85km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R267 in Portnason, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal
- 161km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R188 in Drumnagran, Cootehill, Co. Cavan
- 145km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N15 in Coolcholly, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal.
