A man charged with money laundering offences involving a sum “close on” €800,000 is to go on trial in Kilkenny.
Alexandru Cozac, Lanesborough Street, Roscommon Town, was presented with a book of evidence in the case at a sitting of Kilkenny District Court.

State solicitor Gerry Meaney told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions consented to Mr Cozac being sent forward for trial to the next sitting of Kilkenny Circuit Court, commencing on July 15.

Mr Cozac is charged with nine counts of money laundering, contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010. These are alleged to have occurred at an unknown location within the State on specific dates between February 19, 2024, and April 5, 2024.

The defendant is also charged with one count of being a participant in an organised crime organisation, contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006.

Judge Geraldine Carthy sent the case forward for trial to the next sittings of Kilkenny Circuit Court and gave the usual alibi warning to the defendant.
Solicitor Ed Hughes was granted legal aid for junior and senior counsel.

Mr Meaney said the sum of money alleged to be involved is “close on” €800,000 and ‘as big as these cases go.’
Mr Cozac was remanded on bail, on conditions including that he sign on at a garda station three times a week, carry a mobile at all times to be contactable, appear at each and every remand hearing and not apply for travel documents as his passport has already been surrendered.
