John Mackey RIP

The man accused of the murder of a Kilkenny man in London will stand trial at the Old Bailey this week.

87 year-old John Mackey died following a robbery as he walked home from the shops. He passed away in hospital two days after he was injured, on Thursday, May 8.

Originally from Mellowes Park in Callan, Mr Mackey had lived in London since he was a young man. He was described as  funny and charming, adored by his family and loved by his local community.

One of 11 children, Mr Mackey left Callan for London in the 1950s and settled in the Finsbury Park area. Always a proud Irishman, he was also a lifelong Arsenal supporter and uncle to 22 nieces and nephews.

In June, Mr Mackey's remains were brought home for burial in Callan.

A 58 year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder. Due to begin today (Monday) the trial is expected to take up to two weeks.
