A number of new, probationary gardaí have been assigned to the Kilkenny area as part of the most recent graduation from the garda college.

Fianna Fáil TD Peter 'Chap' Cleere has welcomed the allocation of eight probationary gardaí to Carlow and Kilkenny, saying the additional personnel will strengthen frontline policing and help keep local communities safe.

The allocation follows the attestation of 207 probationer Gardaí at the Garda College in Templemore. Following their graduation, the new members have now been assigned to Garda divisions across the country.

Of the eight new Gardaí, seven have been assigned to Carlow and one has been assigned to Kilkenny.

The latest attestation sees the organisation reach its highest numbers of sworn members since the foundation of the State at 14,980 and follows sustained progress in Garda recruitment.

Of the 207 new Gardaí attested, 84 will be deployed to the Dublin Metropolitan Region, 76 to the Eastern Region, 27 to the North-Western Region, and 20 to the Southern Region.

Deputy Cleere said: “We now have the largest number of Gardaí in the history of the State. This latest attestation, along with more than X recruits due to enter the Garda College next week, demonstrates that a strong pipeline is being built to increase Garda numbers in communities across the country.

“The allocation of eight new Gardaí to Carlow and Kilkenny is particularly welcome. Every additional Garda strengthens our local policing service and helps ensure our communities receive the support and protection they deserve.

“High visibility policing remains a strong commitment for Fianna Fáil. Visible policing plays a vital role in preventing crime, supporting victims, and providing reassurance to our communities. Continued investment in Garda recruitment and resources is essential to ensure An Garda Síochána can meet the demands placed upon it.

“The work being led by my colleague, Minister Jim O’Callaghan, is delivering real results. Today’s allocation means more Gardaí on our streets and stronger, safer communities.”
