Kilkenny father and son to be buried together after passing away a month apart

Tributes have poured in for Kilkenny father and son who passed away within a month of each other.

Richard Murphy formerly of Polerone, Mooncoin, Kilkenny and recently in London, passed away suddenly in London on December 23, 2024.

Richard's father Sonny Murphy passed away peacefully in Polerone on Monday January 21, 2025 age 95. Both Sonny and Richard are predeceased by their beloved wife and mother Birdie.

Tributes were paid to both men's rip.ie pages from family, friends and neighbours over the course of both their lives. Sonny and Birdie's love for one another was encapsulated in many of the tributes and Richard's good nature and friendliness to all he met over the course of his life are things he is fondly remembered for.

One person in tribute to Sonny said: "A very difficult time for you all. He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to talk to. May he rest in eternal peace with his beloved Birdie and son, Richard."

Another said: "I had the pleasure of meeting Sonny and his late wife Birdie several times with my late husband Walter. Lovely couple. May Sonny and his son rest in peace"

A childhood friend of Richard said: "We have lovely memories of times spent with Richard in Grange as children. Fun times picking spuds and days spent down the bogs. Richard played a part in many of our childhood memories."

A friend of Richard's said: "I met Richard when I started working at the pub where he drank and although I only knew him for a short space of time I would like to say he was a very nice person and we spoke about everything, it felt as if I had known him for longer than I did."

A neighbour said: "What a beautiful soul. Will always remember Richards beaming smile and michievous but innocent ways. He wouldnt harm a fly. He was 1 lively character as a child in Polerone, full of the joys of life."

Richard will be sadly missed by his brother Michael, sister-in-law Norita, nephews, cousins and friends in Ireland and England.

Sonny will be sadly missed by his loving son Michael, daughter-in-law Norita, grandsons, Stephen, Aaron and Cillian, brother Martin, nieces, nephews , relatives, friends and loving home-carers.

Richard and his father Sonny will be laid to rest together.

Sonny will be reposing on Friday, January 31, 2025 at his residence at Cantwells Lane, Polerone, Mooncoin, from 4pm until 6pm. Richard and Sonny will be buried together on Saturday, February 1, 2025 after Requiem Mass at 11am at The Church of the Assumption Mooncoin in the adjoining new cemetery.
