The late Tom McGrath

Tributes flooded in in for legendary Syd Harkin's barman Tom McGrath, who unexpectedly but peacefully passed away at home over the weekend.

Mr McGrath's funeral mass took place on Wednesday morning in St Patrick's Church.

"Rest in peace to our dear friend Tom. One of life's gentle souls. Missed by all that had the pleasure to meet you. Sleep easy brother," David Harkin of Syd Harkin's Bar said.

Meanwhile, many family, friends, and past customers have taken to RIP.ie to express their heartfelt condolences.

One regular of Syd Harkin's commented, "Very saddened to hear of Tom’s sudden passing. Many fond memories over the years of both himself and Eamonn looking after me in Syds. Always had a wonderful smile and warm greeting. Taken way too soon. Heartfelt condolences to Eamonn, his siblings and extended families and friends. May Tom’s gentle soul Rest in Peace."

While an old friend said, "Rest in Peace Tom. We started school the same day. He was a pleasure to meet ever since. He loved his job. He loved Kilkenny hurling. It is a distinct possibility he went through life without offending a single person. A sad day for his 10 siblings and all the McGrath family."

Another customer of Tom's said, "Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends on the untimely passing of Tom. Himself and Eamonn alas Speedy were the epitome of my weekends out many moons ago. A great double act and savage barmen who not only remembered everyone’s drink but your name too. Great personality and a genuine gentleman who kept his customers entertained as well as topped up. They sure don’t make them like the used to. May you Rest in Eternal Peace Tom lad."

A friend spoke highly oh him, saying, "Sincere sympathies to Eamonn and the McGrath family on the sad passing of Tom. He had a great smile and an infectious laugh and a word for everyone in The Village Inn. May Tom's gentle soul rest in peace."
