Funeral details have been announced for a former student of Kilkenny College, Kieran McCardle, who died in a road traffic accident in Tipperary last Friday night.

Kieran from Woodlands, Kilcash, Clonmel, died when the ride-on lawnmower he was driving was involved in a collision with a car at Kilcash Cross at approximately 9.50pm. It's understood he was on his way to a friend's house when the accident occurred.

The Kilkenny College past pupil was known for his sense of humour and larger-than-life persona. In younger days he was a standout rugby player with his school where he played a key role in the memorable 2007 senior cup run, as well as involvement with Clonmel Rugby Club and others. Clonmel RFC was among those to pay tribute to Kieran, as did Mayor of Clonmel Pat English, who described him as a popular man who was well-liked in the area.

“My thoughts go out to his family and friends,” said Cllr English. “Everyone in the area is shocked, it’s a terrible situation. “It’s a terrible tragedy for a young man to die like that and the place is in complete shock.

"It was a terrible, tragic accident. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I understand that Kieran McArdle was going to a friend’s house when the accident happened.”

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Kieran McArdle, Woodlands, Kilcash, Clonmel, County Tipperary on Friday, April 11, 2025. Sadly missed by his heartbroken father John, grandfather Tony, brothers Pierce and Ryan, uncles, aunts, relatives and close friends.

Kieran’s Funeral Service will take place on Friday, April 18 in St John the Baptist Church, Kilcash at noon followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. House private please.
