A traditional 'tea-time rush' seems to have pushed the turnout in today's referendum over the 30% mark.
The referendum asks two questions, with a separate vote on each. The proposals involve the insertion of additional text to article 41.1.1 of the Constitution and the deletion of text in article 41.3.1. However widespread confusion about the topic of the referendum has been pointed to as one of the reasons for the very low turnout.
As polls neared closing, this evening, some of the turnouts from around the county included:
Kilmacow - 30%
Kilkenny City (KSP polling station) - over 30%
Glenmore - 31%
Urlingford - 30%
Freshford - 34%
Callan - 28%
Polling stations will close at 10pm and the count will take place tomorrow. The votes for the Carlow Kilkenny constituency will be counted in Kilkenny. Boxes will be opened at 9am and an indication of the result should emerge mid morning. The final result in Kilkenny is expected in the afternoon and the final national result will be announced at Dublin Castle, where all constituency results will be tabulated. Kilkenny Live will cover tomorrow's count from start to finish online, with analysis in next week's Kilkenny People newspaper.
