As we enter a new year, one group of heroes and heroines are continuing their efforts to leave the world in a better place.
Over the years, countless Kilkenny volunteers have brought hope and joy into the lives of children in the poorest areas of Mombasa in Kenya, offering practical skills and companionship through the ‘Ray of Sunshine Foundation’.
The Clare-based charity has supported over 300 children from the poverty stricken village of Likoni, erecting pre and primary schools by constructing classrooms and educational facilities as well as spaces for those wishing to learn a trade.

The group has also established rescue homes for those fleeing sexual exploitation, with their efforts all in aid of offering young people the best chance to maximise their potential in life.
Billy Murphy, a local builder, has been involved for an incredible 25 years.
Not for the first time, this month saw Billy made the long trip across the world to Likoni in Mombasa to oversee the construction of three new classrooms at a school in the region (WATCH BELOW).
Speaking to the Kilkenny People in November, the local man hailed the support of the community in his ongoing efforts.
"It requires an awful lot of goodwill of people to be involved, to give the time. I’m lucky here in Kilkenny. We have a great core especially in North Kilkenny now. (We have a great crowd from Ballyragget, especially from Conahy. GAA rivalries are put to one side and generosity comes to the fore," he commented.
