Polling stations will remain open until 10pm
Voters across Kilkenny are joining people across Ireland going to the polls to elect a new president today.
Despite predictions that turnout could be low today (Friday) it seems that a steady turnout, this morning, is higher than many expected at this stage in the day.
Just before lunchtime several polling stations in Kilkenny reported turnout topping 10%.
At two city polling stations (St Canice's and St John's (Lake School) around 10% of voters had cast their votes before 1pm.
This figure was reflected in Callan, at 9.9%.
Although the start of the day was slow, with one rural north Kilkenny polling station just describing the day as 'quiet, wet and cold' at around 10am, this seemed to pick up as the weather improved during the morning. In a south Kilkenny polling station one staff member reported a surprisingly steady flow of people from when the doors opened, at 7am.
Polling stations will remain open until 10pm. Bring along your polling card but if you did not receive one in the post you can still vote if you are on the register, just bring along a form of ID to your local polling station.
