Loyalty of factories to farmers ‘has to be questioned’

Falling value: While beef prices in other countries remain stable factories here drop quotes

How time flies... it is hard to believe that it is the end of June and we have passed the longest day.
At least the weather is not too bad as drought conditions have been alleviated somewhat thanks to some heavy showers, which at time caused difficulties, especially around the city.

Grass growth in some places has started to recover but other areas have not been as lucky as the rain has been very localised.

Cattle
On the cattle front factories have continued to drop quotes which is hard to understand as prices in the UK and other beef importing countries has remained stable.

The loyalty of factories to their customers has to be questioned as many farmers who have beef type animals to sell are being given the run around, as agents are restricting numbers on instruction from their bosses.

Imports of beef into Ireland have increased with factories in Ireland now in control of many beef outlets in Europe and now the UK. Many factories are suggesting they are finding it difficult to secure new markets and China has not been as beneficial as expected.

But the question should be asked, does the imported beef now coming into our country measure up to all the rules and regulations experienced by the Irish beef producer? If top quality beef is required, which is being produced by Irish farmers from a general grass base, they should be able to secure a decent return for their product, or do factories feel they are no longer needed?
As the late, great Bill O’Herlihy would say ‘we’ll leave it there so.’

Sheep
Monday’s sheep sale once again attracted bigger numbers compared to last year , with 750 on offer.
With the live exporters not operating trade remained remarkably firm with butcher types ranging from €168 to €192 per head and factory types ranging from €138 to €184 per head.
Cull ewes ranged from €70 to €225 per head.

Sheep do not need to be entered in advance but if you are bringing a sizable number over 60 perhaps you could contact the mart office on 056 7721407.

Relay for Life
This weekend Relay For Life takes place in Kilkenny Rugby Club, just out the Waterford Road. This is a fundraiser for cancer research and support for Night Nurses and takes place from 1pm this Saturday to 1pm Sunday, July 1 and 2.

The candle of hope ceremony takes place on Saturday from 9.30pm and the closing ceremony is Sunday at 1pm.

You would be very welcome to come on your own or with friends and perhaps remember a friend or relative that has succumbed to cancer or has passed away. So if you could find time to pop in at any stage over the 24 hours it would be great.
Until next time, do be careful on the farm and good buying, good selling and good luck.
