Kilkenny Mart: Imports of beef into this country still increasing

It shows disrespect to the Irish producer

It was hard to miss the happenings this week regarding the situation in RTE where payments to the top players presenters came under scrutiny — a situation which has it appears been going on for many years.

No wonder the ordinary workers at the national broadcaster feel angry and let down due to the fact they were asked to take pay cuts and even though the top presenters were ask to do the same some were getting under the table payments which were not made public. This situation will take some time to resolve but at least one star has taken a big fall.

On the cattle front the factories have continued to cut quotes for beef for the seventh consecutive week with very much take it or leave it attitude. Imports of beef into this country has also increased which is showing total disrespect to the Irish producer.

No wonder we have seen a dramatic reduction of the suckler herd with Teagasc stating that returns from this sector are unviable. Supply and demand always rules the roost and smaller supplies might eventually increase prices. Mart numbers are comparatively small with only 560 on offer last Thursday.

The demand for culled cows showed a slight reduction for the first time in many weeks with the bulk of the Friesian cows ranging from €1.20 to €1.80 per kilo with the heavier types €1.60 to €2.30 per kilo. The good continental cows are still selling well with most ranging from €1.70 to €2.60 per kilo.

The best trade was for the fancy light stores with a range in prices from €2.50 to €3.40 per kilo. The recent rain has helped to increase grass growth which has encouraged farmers to start shopping again for cattle.

As I said a few weeks ago if the factories are giving you the run around why not try the mart ring where you might be pleasantly surprised.
To enter cattle it just a matter of calling Kilkenny Mart on 056 7721407 before 3.30pm on the previous Wednesday.

The sheep sale this week attracted smaller numbers with 500 on offer Butcher lambs with good flesh sold well ranging from €148 to €178 per head and factory types €110 to €153 per head.Cull ewes saw prices range from €65 to €230 per head.
