Important dairy monitor walk in Kilmacow, Kilkenny

Brendan Phelan, Kilmacow

A Teagasc/Glanbia Dairy Monitor Farm Walk will be held on the farm of Brendan Phelan, Ballykillaboyle, Kilmacow (X91 T672) on Tuesday, October 9 at 11am.
Brendan has been participating in the monitor farm programme for the last four years and this is the final walk on this farm.
The Teagasc/Glanbia Joint Programme was set up to position dairy farmers in the Glanbia area to take advantage of growth opportunities post-2015.
On this walk you will see and hear how Brendan has progressed over the last four years and what skills and knowledge he has gained from the programme to sustainably and profitably future-proof his dairy farm business.
The physical and financial performance over the last four years will be discussed as well as the improvements achieved in breeding and grassland management.

Brendan is milking 182 crossbred cows on 47ha of a total milking platform of 57ha. The cows are currently stocked at four cows per ha. The cows are milking very well with 60% of the herd on their first or second lactation. The herd somatic cell count (SCC) is currently 90cells(‘000)/ml.
You will also hear Brendan’s plans for the future. All are welcome.
