No more roadblocks - Kilkenny TD welcomes court decision on cheese processing plant

"The long delay is regrettable and was wholly avoidable"

A Kilkenny TD has taken a strong position on the "frustration and anxiety" that has been caused by An Tasice's court challenge to the construction of a cheese processing factory in south Kilkenny.

Deputy John Paul Phelan said the process "clearly demonstrates how anti-business and anti-rural An Taisce has allowed itself to become."

Welcoming the Supreme Court decision, published this morning (Wednesday), Deputy Phelan says he hopes no further "roadblocks" will be put in the path of the development.

Fine Gael’s Deputy Phelan welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold An Bord Pleanala’s ruling to  grant planning for Glanbia Ireland and Royal A-ware’s continental cheese plant at Belview on the Kilkenny-Waterford border, just minutes from his home.

“I welcome this decision and hope that it is the end of the road for objections. The long delay is regrettable and was wholly avoidable. It is clear that there is an element within An Taisce that is anti- rural Ireland.

"I respectfully hope that the long wait is now over for the thousands of farm families in this region who invested in their herds and world-class housing and milking facilities to meet demand for their quality produce and whose livelihoods have been put in jeopardy by An Taisce over the past number of years.

“Unfortunately building cost inflation has spiralled since this project was first proposed and we acknowledge the frustration and the anxiety created for Glanbia Ireland and its Dutch partner in this project.

“It is imperative that no further roadblocks are thrown in the way of this project and that construction can commence without delay.”
