Another Kilkenny councillor lines up General Election bid

Peter 'Chap' Cleere was re-elected at June's local elections, topping the poll in Callan-Thomastown

Another Kilkenny councillor has announced his intention to throw his hat in the ring for the next general election in Carlow-Kilkenny.

Peter 'Chap' Cleere has said he plans to seek Fianna Fáil’s nomination to run in the next general election, aiming to win back the Dáil seat previously held by the late Bobby Aylward.

Already, Fine Gael councillors David Fitzgerald and Michael Doyle have been nominated by their party, while Independent Eugene McGuinness has also previously announced his intentions to run.

Cllr Cleere was re-elected at June's local elections, once again topping the poll in the Callan Thomastown Municipal District. He received 2,057 first preferences in the Callan Thomastown local electoral area, more than 600 votes above the quota.

He has been a county councillor for the past 10 years, having served as chairman and Mayor of Kilkenny - and is currently vice chairman of Kilkenny County Council. He hopes to receive his party’s nomination to contest the next general election for Fianna Fáil in the new Carlow Kilkenny constituency.

Speaking to the Kilkenny People on Friday, Cllr Cleere confirmed that he intends to seek the Fianna Fáil nomination to contest the next election: "Having consulted with my family, friends and party members, I have decided to put my name forward, and I'm hoping to receive the backing of the Fianna Fáil membership," he said.

“We don’t have a convention date yet, but nominations are now open and I will be putting myself forward and I would be delighted to be selected as a candidate and certainly would do my utmost to secure a seat for the party in Carlow-Kilkenny," Cllr Cleere said.

“I’m taking nothing for granted, every election is different; I obviously received a very good vote in the recent local election and was very humbled by the level of support I received. But a local election is one thing and a general election is another thing and I will be fighting for every vote and taking nothing for granted, and putting in as strong a campaign as possible, with the hope of securing a seat"
Chap (41) is married to Brenda and they live in Skeoughvosteen with their daughters.
