Drug driving detections are a cause for concern
The shocking statistic that approximately one in every six roadside tests come back positive for drugs is a troubling one.
The figure was provided by gardaí at a recent meeting of Kilkenny’s Joint Policing Committee. It is far higher than the figure for drink driving tests, where there is around one positive per 180 tests. There may be a number of reasons for this.
Random mandatory alcohol testing checkpoints involve testing a large amount of people — in some cases every vehicle passing through — so naturally they would sample a much larger field.
It may also be the case that the drug testing is more targeted. Gardaí will stop motorists who behave erratically or drive poorly; certain behaviours or characteristics are noticed, prompting the test .
Nonetheless, the figures are worrying. A generation has grown up with the message that drink driving is unacceptable. It has definitely changed a lot of motorists’ behaviour and willingness to take a chance.
If the roadside testing is ramped up, it’s likely more positive tests will arise as a result. This issue may require a large-scale public awareness campaign in tandem, similar to the past campaigns around alcohol, to finally drive the message home.
