Top effort: €8,000 raised for Irish Cancer Society during Daffodil Day in Kilkenny City

KILKENNY

Daffodil Day returned to the street on Kilkenny on March 24 — and once again, the people of Kilkenny were not found wanting when it came to supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s annual flagship fundraising event.

A total of €8,000 was raised on the streets of Kilkenny in support of the invaluable services provided by the Irish Cancer Society for cancer patients and their families across Ireland.

During National Volunteering Week on Wednesday, Daffodil Day volunteers were invited by Mayor of Kilkenny David Fitzgerald to Kilkenny City Hall to make the formal presentation of the cheque to a representative of the Irish Cancer Society.

“I’m delighted to welcome the Daffodil Day team to the town hall today to acknowledge their fundraising on behalf of Cancer services across the country,” said the mayor.

“In the last 20 years the combined efforts of the Irish Cancer Society, HSE and all other organisations have led to a 50% increase in the survival rates for people with Cancer across the country.

“Huge progress has been made over the years and that is thanks to the awareness of the likes of Daffodil Day has provided and the fundraising which has gone into developing services for patients across the country. To all the volunteers who offered their services on Daffodil Day, thank you for playing your part.”

Kilkenny Volunteer Centre, who supported the coordination of the fundraiser said they are very appreciative of the time and effort given by local volunteers.

“We are so thankful to all the volunteers who supported us this Daffodil Day,” said Salena Grace, Manager of Kilkenny Volunteer Centre.

“We were thrilled to have the Transition Year students from CBS Secondary School and students from Kilkenny Youthreach come on board as well as the dedicated team of local volunteers and community organisers. Each and every volunteer played a huge part in helping to make the day a resounding success and should be very proud of their contribution.”
Emma Hayden, Irish Cancer Society Representative for South Leinster, said the organisation was thrilled with the funds raised in Kilkenny.

“This €8,000 is a remarkable contribution and we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Kilkenny Volunteer Centre along with all the volunteers who contributed to the day’s success,” she said.

“We would also like to offer a special word of thanks to everyone who gave so generously to the campaign. We cannot stress enough how important Daffodil Day is for the Irish Cancer Society and how many key services this annual event funds each year.”
