Nature, energy and the power of healing are all inate in the work of Kilkenny artist, Mary Doyle Burke, who is currently holding her solo exhibition Metamorphisis at the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny.
“Nature, the land or the sea just opens up a channel for me as a woman, as an artist, as a poet, as a maker, as a healer. This work is both an exploration and an ode of gratitude to this,” explains the artist.
In the works in this installation Mary presents a body of abstracted paintings and sculptural paintings. The abstracted paintings are created with a mix of acrylic paint and organic paint onto canvas. Layers of texture are built up through energy painting and performance dance and sand, grit, seaweed, reeds and ruses have been added through the painting process. The artist creates hybrid artworks and installations floating between painting and sculpture.
The theme of this work is based on the land and how humans exist with it, exploring the divine feminine connection with nature and the metamorphism between the two.
The body of the work evolved while researching outdoors the use of gathering organic materials as materials for her art practise. The artist while out roaming the land and absorbing the healing of the rivers and sea, an enquiry into the effects on one's senses while immersed in nature arose. During these moments of immersion in nature, she looks inward and using subconscious modalities, ties into releasing and shifting energy on a vibrational and energetic level, this has been transferred into the core of the artworks that form this installation Metamorphosis.
There is also a Spoken Word for Metamorphosis exhibition which is available to view at the gallery at The Watergate.
Mary Doyle Burke is a multi-disciplinary artist from Kilkenny who has a deep love of nature and of land and the sea. She also works as Managing Director of An Chead Tine Art Studios at 10, The Parade.
The exhibition runs at the Watergate until the end of October.
