Proceeds go to funding Kenya Immersion Programme
Colaiste Abhainn Ri students are hosting a number of fundraisers to raise money for their upcoming Kenya Immersion Programme.
On Friday, October 6, The Edge hair studio in Callan is hosting a ‘make-up and hair tutorial’ to raise money.
The event will begin at five pm and refreshments will be made available on arrival.
The entry fee is €10 on the night.
The event was organised by three students who are hoping to make the journey to Kenya in the new year.
On September 16, four students hosted a car wash in Mullinahone church car park in a similar effort.
The students have to organise their own individual fundraisers as part of the programme.
One of the teachers accompanying the students on their trip, Cian Ryan said that the students taking on the responsibility of raising a portion of the money themselves is a big part of the programme.
“We come together as a group and raise whatever is needed once individual fundraising is done,” he said.
Whatever money is left, after paying for flights, accommodation and transport, will be donated to whatever local project is in need of funding at the time.
“The more we raise, the more we will be able to donate,” said Mr Ryan.
The school organised a similar programme in 2017 and the money they had left over went toward a local water scheme, selling water to the community to raise money for the school.
Mr Ryan explained that the Kenya immersion programme was designed for the students to get the opportunity to fully integrate themselves in the day-to-day life over there.
“The whole idea of the immersion programme is that you immerse yourself fully in the culture,” he said.
This will include attending school for a week, preparing and having lunch with the local students, visiting aid and orphanage centers, dancing, playing games and much more.
Mr Ryan explained that the students are going to be involved in as many activities as possible.
Information about the many fundraisers to come will be available on the school’s social media accounts, mainly Instagram and X, formerly Twitter.
