Students across Kilkenny celebrated receiving their Junior Cycle examination results on Wednesday, October 18.

One school in particular was Abbey Community College in Ferrybank, where one student received the ultimate national accolade of ten distinctions in her junior cycle examination results.

“Abbey Community College wishes to congratulate our Junior Cycle class of 2023 on their outstanding Junior Cycle examination results,” said School Principal, Michelle Jefford.

She added that this is an important milestone for the students and their families and the primary schools from which they come, who have all been so supportive throughout their time in Abbey Community College so far and have been vital members of the successful school community.

“We would like to thank all the staff of Abbey Community College, teaching and non-teaching for their dedication and support to the Junior Cycle class of 2023.”

This year, Abbey Community College has noted a considerable increase in the percentage of students who have received distinctions, the highest award available at Junior Cycle.

“We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our student Caoimhe Barry who excelled and received the ultimate accolade of achieving ten distinctions. Not only is this an achievement at local level for Caoimhe and Abbey Community College but also at national level,” said Michelle Jefford.

“Reflecting on these Junior Cycle examination results, we are so very proud of our school community who continue to excel academically with enthusiasm and commitment as we all work Together Towards Excellence.“

The examination results will be combined with outcomes of Classroom Based Assessments, short courses and other areas of learning to create the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement award for each student.

A 5% increase from 2022 saw a total of 70,727 students sit the junior cycle examinations this year.

It is the first time that the number of candidates sitting the Junior Cycle exams or any of its predecessors has exceeded 70,000 students.

It is also the second year that all students sat exams under the new Junior Cycle curriculum.
