Opinion - Making time to find a realistic gym routine- Kilkenny Live

The Ormonde Leisure Club

I tend to be a creature of extremes - which has positive and negative outcomes so as I could have probably predicted for the first week or so I would be all over my new regime and embrace my new and healthier lifestyle

I carved out time slots in my diary and religiously went along to the gym and kept a food diary but by the middle of the second week my enthusiasm started to wane. Not so much my enthusiasm but my time management skills and I took my foot off the pedal.

I found it difficult to find the time to go to the gym but if I am being honest I just didn’t prioritise it enough and then the week was almost over. The penny slowly dropped - that in order for this to be a success it has to be moderate and considered and realistic for me to incorporate into my schedule.

So back I went to the gym and took out my schedule which has been carefully devised and adjusted by Calvin, one of the fitness instructors at the leisure club. It took a bit of time to remember the exercises and how to use the machines but there were staff on hand to help and show me and before I knew it I was back into it.

It takes time to form any habit, good or bad and this will be no different but I discovered in the past week that I really need to be disciplined to make the time to go to the gym. When I am there it is easy to get into it, with helpful staff to answer any queries and a friendly atmosphere it was just that I didn’t make enough time for it last week.

Life can so easily get in the way of the path of good intentions but it is important to be honest with how much time you can and will commit. I think I was probably overly enthusiastic the first week and then didn’t plan my time properly last week so this week it is back to the drawing board.

Three sessions and if all goes well maybe even a class but the three sessions is a minimum. That really isn’t a lot but it will take a bit of planning to make sure it happens. Thankfully it is only the start and overall it is going well. As the adage goes Rome wasn’t built in a day!
