Betty McCormack has been named Netwatch’s Kilkenny family carer of the year.
This prestigious accolade recognises the exceptional dedication and commitment of family carers across the nation who provide vital care at home for loved ones with additional needs.
Betty has been caring for her son Noel following multiple health issues. Noel previously received treatment for a brain tumour but unfortunately has had two strokes in the last nine years which has resulted in him requiring full-time care.
He has suffered a loss of speech, reduced mobility and is PEG-fed. Betty has been providing 24-hour care to her son ever since without complaint. She was nominated by her son Tom who spoke about the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on Betty who put her house on lockdown due to Noel’s condition and is still mindful of being ‘out and about’ due to the possible implications contracting the virus would have for her son.
Betty was joined by Tom and her two grandchildren at a ceremony in City Hall on Thursday (November 9) where Mayor Joe Malone congratulated her on her nomination.
“Fair play to you,” he said, adding that providing constant care for a family member is not an easy thing to do and that family carers such as herself are ‘unsung heroes’.
Also in attendance was Danielle Dunne, local Community Supports Manager with Family Carers Ireland and Seán Butler, customer care manager at Netwatch.
"The Netwatch Family Carer of the Year Awards not only recognise the dedication and sacrifices made by every single family carer, but also serve as a powerful reminder of the crucial role they play in our society. Their resilience, love and support are immeasurable. Their contributions are a testament to the strength of our community,” said Danielle
“Betty’s story reflects the commitment, love and hard work exhibited by family carers throughout the country.”
Seán Butler said that Netwatch is delighted to sponsor an event like this.
He said that looking after people is what they do and there is a strong link between carers and security.
“The work done by carers behind the scenes is 24/7,” he added.
Betty’s son, Tom said that he was delighted that his mother was getting the recognition for the work she does caring for Noel.
“It’s a very proud day,” he said,
“She has been looking after him since day one.”
Betty said she was delighted to receive carer of the year and that she is thrilled to receive it on behalf of all carers.
She said she would like to see more support being made available to carers as the work they do is 24/7.
Family Carers Ireland says that while the awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the often-hidden work of Ireland’s family carers, they also seek to underscore the importance of ensuring all family carers can access the essential supports and services they need care safely at home such as access to appropriate financial compensation, respite and therapies for their loved ones.
“When you hear the stories of family carers, you can't help but be moved by their commitment to going above and beyond for their loved ones every day. Sadly, this work is largely unseen and too often undervalued,” said Mick Galwey, Netwatch Brand Ambassador.
Family carers truly deserve our support and recognition and to play some small part in helping to do that is very special to all of us at Netwatch.”
