Kilkenny rises early for annual Darkness into Light walk

Kilkenny News

Kilkenny woke before dawn for the Darkness into Light walk

A yellow wave of compassion washed over Kilkenny as large crowds turned out for the annual Darkness Into Light campaign.

Runners and walkers, many clad in the familiar yellow t-shirts, were up before dawn to walk into the light. The walk, which raises funds for Pieta House, gives people the opportunity to connect with their local community and to bring hope to people who have been impacted by suicide. Pieta is 85% funded by fundraising events like Darkness Into Light. Last year’s event raised over €4 million for people impacted by suicide and self-harm.

Kilkenny was host to a number of walks this year, including in Inistioge, Callan, Mullinavat and Ballyhale. The main event was held in the city, with the James Stephens Army barracks hosting runners and walkers, all of whom were sent off with an inspiring message.

“By joining us this morning for the most important sunrise of the year you’re sending a message of powerful hope,” said Aurelia Glynn of Pieta. “You’re letting anyone in our community who may be struggling know they are not alone.”

The city’s 5km walk left just before 4.15am, bringing people down John Street and the Canal Walk before returning to the Barracks via the Parade and High Street. There were singers dotted along the route, before the Lady Desart Choir delivered a series of uplifting songs back at DiL HQ.
