After a whirlwind success in 2024, the Saddle Up for Down Syndrome (SUDS) Kilkenny is back for a second year!
The charity cycle, which will be held on Sunday, May 11, will raise funds for Down Syndrome Kilkenny, a local family-led voluntary group that relies on fundraising to support its members. Starting from Danesfort GAA club, the event offers three scenic routes designed to suit riders of all abilities.
The inaugural event in 2024 saw almost 300 cyclists come together and raise €70,000 for local services. Thanks to their generosity, Down Syndrome Kilkenny is set to launch an afterschool programme on May 7. The venue is kindly hosted by the Presentation Secondary School in its sensory room. It aims to support educational services and social skills development and build a strong sense of community for its members.
A dedicated speech and language therapy (SLT) professional will join the organisation along with other vital supports like occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The funds will also provide resources to run Easter and summer camps and social activities such as therapeutic pony riding and sports camps.
“This service will allow the children to grow and reach their full potential in an environment set at their pace, facilitated by trained professionals,” said Fiona Heffernan, chairperson of Down Syndrome Kilkenny. “The money raised will completely transform the lives of our members and their families.”
Race organiser and treasurer of Down Syndrome Kilkenny, Sean Manicle, has encouraged all cyclists to come along to this year’s event.
GREAT CRAIC
“We couldn’t have anticipated the success of our first SUDS Kilkenny cycle, and now we want to build on that momentum and make a bigger, better event for everyone to enjoy,” he said. “There will be great craic at Danesfort GAA Club, lots of activities, and family fun, so come along and make a day of it! Sponsor a cyclist on our iDonate page or sign up to ride with us on May 11.”

Cyclists can choose from three routes. Cyclists can enjoy a leisurely tour of Kells, Bennettsbridge, Gowran and Thomastown on the 45km trail. Experienced riders can choose the 65km or 105km routes that bring them to Paulstown, Leighlinbridge and a return journey via Ballygorteen, returning to Danesfort GAA Club. Cyclists can refuel at one of three pitstops at Gowran Race Park, Paulstown GAA and O'Loughlin Gaels GAA Club. All cycles return to Danesfort GAA club grounds, which will take on a festival feel for the afternoon with family fun, activities, live music, street food and more.
Down Syndrome Kilkenny is calling on cyclists of all abilities to sign up for the event. Tickets are now available for €45 by signing up here.
